"heartfelt, relevant, and incredibly thought-provoking" - Natasha is a Book Junkie

From the national bestselling author of the Ten Tiny Breaths series and The Simple Wild comes a poignant coming-of-age story about a girl trying to change her future while evading her past.

Almost sixteen-year-old Aria Jones is starting over. New postal code, new last name, new rules. But she doesn't mind, because it means she can leave her painful regrets behind. In the bustling town of Eastmonte, she can become someone else. Someone better.

With the Hartford family living next door, it seems she will succeed. Sure, Cassie Hartford may be the epitome of social awkwardness thanks to her autism, but she also offers an innocent and sincere friendship that Aria learns to appreciate. And Cassie's older brother, Emmett--a popular Junior A hockey player with a bright future--well ... Aria wishes that friendship could lead to something more. If he didn't already have a girlfriend, maybe it would.

But Aria soon finds herself in a dicey moral predicament that could derail her attempt at a fresh start. It is her loyalty to Cassie and her growing crush on Emmett that leads her to make a risky move, one that earns her a vindictive enemy who is determined to splinter her happy new world.

Bullying is huge topic Aria is new to school, having left her old school because of some problems that we’re not sure about through the book. She moves next store to a loving family who has a girl around her age who is autistic and a boy around her age who she can’t stop crushing on. Unfortunately said boy already has the perfect girlfriend and thus begins Aria’s journey in her new life.I really liked all the characters. Cassie and Emmett were very likeable and even Aria after everything comes out towards the end. My heart hurt for her because you could tell she was trying to be different from who she was in the past. I don’t want to give too much away but I did feel like Emmett and Aria’s relationship transition was somewhat abrupt. I wasn’t feeling it at first. It was hard for me to tell if Emmett really cared for Aria romantically or if he was just being a teenage boy. The ending was okay but unsatisfactory if you’re the type of person who needs clear-cut answers. Although I wasn’t surprised because with the storyline it’s hard to end it any other way. Also what was the deal with this Mr. Kapp who the students were talking about in the beginning of the book? Did I miss something with him in the end?!Enjoyable, yet forgettable. 2.5 STARSAria and her mom move across country to start a new life, away from trouble, away from everyone who knows what happened. She befriends her next door neighbors, Cassie, who’s autistic and Emmett, who has a perfect girlfriend not realizing that history could repeat itself.BE THE GIRL is a book with a Big Message about bullying and mean girls and a lesser message about including special needs kids. K.A. Tucker doesn’t try to hide her message. The Mean Girl behaves sociopathologically and is without redeeming qualities.I liked Aria and understood how difficult reinventing herself to a better version must have been. Although I didn’t agree with her choices of what to tell and what to keep quiet, especially when Cassie was at risk at a party. Cassie was the only character who had real personality, she seemed to act more like intellectually disabled people I’ve known than autistic ones. I thought Tucker glossed over her difficulties, but loves Emmett’s caring relationship toward her.BE THE GIRL is predictable from start to finish, but also an enjoyable, well written story. It’s not one I’ll likely remember. The message and story didn’t feel unique.Take it or leave it.one of the best books I'll read this year without a doubt... IT WAS EXCEPTIONAL! Be The Girl is my very first FIVE STAR read of 2019 and it'll be up there as one of the best books I'll read this year without a doubt. I've been struggling to find a story that would blow me away this year,  a story full of richness and depth and relatable characters that would reach out and grip me with intense emotion and an unforgettable storyline. (Not too much to ask, is it?) Well I'm thrilled to say I finally found it. Be the Girl is moving and heart wrenching, thought provoking and romantic. It's a story full of regret and redemption, unconditional love and friendship, and IT IS EXCEPTIONAL. There are so many nuances to this story, I don't even know where to begin. Read this book because of the sweet YA love story. Read this book because of the teen angst and maddening dynamic that'll take you right back to high school. Read this book because it's eye opening. Because it's rich with messages of empathy and forgiveness. Read this book because it'll make you a better human. Read this book because of Cassie and all the things her blinding light will teach you. Read this book because Aria's story sends a powerful, hopeful, unforgettable message we all can relate to in some way. Read this book because Emmett is the kind of character we hope our daughters find and our sons grow up to be. Read this book because it'll change the way you look at the world. Be The Girl brought tears to my eyes more than once. It filled me with an overwhelming sense of giddiness because I had finally found a book that I couldn't put down, never wanted to end, and won't stop thinking about anyone soon. The youthful romance between Emmett and Aria gave me nostalgic feels of first love and unsettling emotions and raging hormones and it was both delicious and complicated and I loved every second. This is a story that resonated with me because I could see myself on these pages. I've been there, in the dark places, and as painful and unsettling as those feelings were when they came to the surface, this story is a testament to the fact that things do get better. People do grow and change and learn from their mistakes. It's a potent, necessary reminder that you're not alone and that all we really need is a desire to understand each other. What a beautiful world we'd live in if we simply sought understanding instead of isolating ourselves from what looks a little different. What a brilliant book KA Tucker delivers with Be the Girl. What a wholly unforgettable story this was. One of my goals for this new year was to stop spending my time reading books that are anything less than exceptional and this book, my friends, is simply extraordinary.
